RRSP contributions and deductions: what can you claim now?
Separate a new RRSP contribution from the deduction claimed in 2026. Compare two checked Ontario examples, unused contributions and remaining room.

Does contributing mean you must deduct everything this year?
A contribution and a deduction are separate entries. In this Ontario example, $5,000 newly contributed plus $2,000 of previously reported unused contributions gives $7,000 available to claim, within an entered $20,000 deduction limit. Claiming $3,000 reduces modelled 2026 income tax by $889.50 and leaves $4,000 undeducted. Claiming all $7,000 reduces it by $2,075.50. This does not identify the best future claim year or predict a refund.

The worked example
| Current-year measure | Claim $3,000 | Claim $7,000 |
|---|---|---|
| New contribution | $5,000.00 | $5,000.00 |
| Previously unused contributions | $2,000.00 | $2,000.00 |
| Current deduction | $3,000.00 | $7,000.00 |
| Estimated income-tax reduction | $889.50 | $2,075.50 |
| Contributions left undeducted | $4,000.00 | $0.00 |
| Entered deduction limit left unused | $17,000.00 | $13,000.00 |
| Contribution room left in this model | $13,000.00 | $13,000.00 |
Calculation version ca-employment-2026-v1/rrsp-timing-v2. Figures are estimates under the assumptions below.
Start with your CRA records
The new contribution is money paid into the plan. Previously unused contributions are amounts already reported but not yet deducted. The deduction is the eligible amount claimed against income for the selected year. Use the deduction limit and unused-contribution information in your CRA records, rather than inferring room from your current salary.
This example assumes all $7,000 is eligible within the entered limit. It does not use an overcontribution buffer or model excess contributions, spousal attribution, transfers or Home Buyers’ Plan and Lifelong Learning Plan repayments.

Reconcile contributions, deductions and room
$5,000 new plus $2,000 previously unused equals $7,000 available. Deducting $3,000 leaves $4,000 undeducted. Deducting $7,000 leaves zero. Both cases have contributed the same amount, so this model leaves the same $13,000 of contribution room: $20,000 minus $7,000.
The unused deduction limit differs: $17,000 after a $3,000 claim and $13,000 after a $7,000 claim. Those are current-year planning balances. Carrying contributions forward does not reverse the contributions already made or restore contribution room. Future earned income, pension adjustments and CRA assessments are not projected.

A tax reduction is not the refund cheque
For this salary and these deductions, the separately checked marginal arithmetic is 20.5% federal plus 9.15% Ontario. $3,000 × 29.65% is $889.50; $7,000 × 29.65% is $2,075.50. The underlying payroll contributions are unchanged by this RRSP deduction in the annual model.
The actual refund or balance owing also depends on tax withheld and the rest of the return. The new cash contributed remains $5,000 in either case. Do not treat the $7,000 deduction as $7,000 of new cash invested. The illustration excludes refundable benefits and many personal credits.

Compare timing without pretending to know future tax rates
A smaller claim can leave eligible contributions for a future deduction, but a future deduction’s value depends on that year’s rules, income and circumstances. This calculator does not determine an optimal claim year, estimate future contribution-room accrual or decide whether delaying relief is suitable.
If eligible relief reaches payroll sooner through an authorized arrangement, it changes cash-flow timing. T1213 is a separate authorization process. Receiving relief through withholding and later claiming the deduction does not create the reduction twice. Keep separate named plans for the assumptions you want to compare.

Common questions
Does an unused RRSP deduction restore contribution room?
No. The contribution was already made. In this example, both claim amounts leave $13,000 of contribution room in the current-year model; they leave different amounts undeducted and different unused deduction limits.
Is the estimated tax reduction my guaranteed refund?
No. It is the modelled difference in annual income tax with and without the deduction. Your withholding, other income, credits and tax return determine a refund or balance owing.
Can the calculator tell me the best year to claim?
No. It calculates the supported current-year deduction and carry-forward balances. It does not forecast future tax rules, income, benefits or an optimal claim year.
