How do I calculate net worth without counting home equity twice?

Add the included value of each asset, then subtract the included amount of every debt. Enter the home’s full value and your included ownership share as an asset, and record mortgage responsibility separately as a debt. Do not add home equity again. A snapshot of $475,000 assets and $310,000 debts has $165,000 net worth. This is a balance sheet, not spendable cash or an investment-return measure.

Common questions

Does a 50% share of a home mean I should enter 50% of the mortgage?

Not automatically. Asset ownership and debt responsibility can differ. Enter the included share for each row separately. Joint and several liability can make a borrower responsible for more than their ownership percentage. Review the actual agreement; DollarMath does not determine legal responsibility.

Are retirement accounts and home value the same as available cash?

No. Net worth includes entered asset values before future taxes, withdrawal restrictions and selling costs. Mark readily available assets yourself and review those constraints. The liquidity subtotal is your classification, not a verified amount available to spend.

Can net worth be negative?

Yes. If included debts exceed included assets, net worth is negative. For example, $10,000 of assets less $25,000 of debt gives negative $15,000. No debt or asset value is erased to force a positive answer.

Can I save plans or use my results in Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Save named plans in this browser without an account, then reopen, compare, rename or duplicate them. JSON backups can restore editable plans after local validation and a review step. Download a spreadsheet for typed inputs, results and detailed schedules where available, then open it in Excel or import it into Google Sheets yourself. Workbooks are snapshots, not live calculator formulas. Plans and files are not encrypted; clearing browser data can remove device plans. Nothing is automatically uploaded or synchronized.

How the snapshot is calculated

Assets less debts

For each row, the entered full value is rounded to cents, multiplied by the included percentage and rounded to cents again. Add included asset values and subtract included debts. Cash and readily available assets are subtotals, not extra assets added again. Zero or negative net worth is valid.

A checked example

$10,000 cash, $25,000 investments, $40,000 retirement assets and a 50% share of an $800,000 home give $475,000 included assets. A $300,000 mortgage responsibility plus $10,000 other debt gives $310,000 liabilities and $165,000 net worth. If only cash and the investments are marked readily available, that subtotal is $35,000. It is not an after-tax liquidation estimate.

Ownership is separate from responsibility

An individual or household label does not apply a percentage automatically. Enter each share deliberately and each asset once. Include gross property value with a separate mortgage, or a carefully reconciled equity-only entry without subtracting that mortgage again. The full-value and separate-debt method is easier to audit. Joint debt can create responsibility beyond an ownership share; legal liability is not determined here.

A dated estimate, not a valuation service

Use realistic sale values and actual balances for the same date. Retirement benefits without an accessible account value need a separate valuation. Taxes, sale costs, future pension income, exchange rates, estate rights and investment forecasts are excluded. Keep dated named plans to compare snapshots. Changes can reflect new saving, debt payments, values, ownership or entry corrections; they are not automatically investment gains.
